Is the Joy of your Christmas in the Presents or in the Presence?
Are Presents your Greatest need this Christmas?
The tradition of giving gifts at Christmas is not a bad one. The Christmas season is actually a good time for giving presents because Christmas itself is the celebration of the gift of God’s Son — the greatest gift ever given to mankind (John 3:16).
We have seen how a lifetime of treasured earthly gifts and possessions can disappear in an instant like the belongings of Ugandan traders in Owino Market in Kampala that was sometime back razed down by fire and burnt to ashes in one night. Worse still, we have also seen how the presence of our relatives and loved ones can cease when they die, or how friends can betray us and turn into our enemies and only remain as a pain in our memories. What then can we cling to as the year goes on when our loved ones are gone and the presents are forgotten? There indeed must be more to Christmas than the celebrating of the day with our friends and relatives or the receiving and unwrapping of Christmas gifts!
