1. GOD'S PEOPLE MUST WAIT ON GOD WITH CONFIDENCE AND TRUST
Number one, the prophet Isaiah says that God's people must wait on God with confidence and trust. Why should God's people wait on God? Why should we believe that if we wait on God, this power will come down into our lives?
Because the prophet Isaiah is saying that you see, the God with whom you have come to be in his presence, is the God who came down before. We are not talking about something that may or may not happen. We are not saying that "Well, God we trust that you will visit us, But who knows, maybe you will change your mind." The prophet Isaiah says, "You came down before. That's why we have confidence that you can come down again." Do you see the argument the prophet is making here?
The prophet is looking back into the past at God's faithfulness and is saying that the God who did it way back in the first surely is faithful to do it even in our times, or even in the future to come.
Do you remember that Hymn that once in a while we sing? "Oh God, our help in ages past, and our hope for years to come." The basis for the hope of the future is based on the faithfulness of God in the past. One reason we read the scriptures is not so that we can just understand the mind and will of God, but so that we can see the God who has faithfully, consistently, acted in history and draw our confidence and comfort in the fact that he who has been faithful in times past, is able to fulfil those things which are not yet fulfilled.
When we believe God's promises and prophecies, we are not just having faith as a leap in the dark, we are exercising the faith-based on facts and information. We are looking to the God of the story and recognizing that he has been consistent. And therefore, if we fulfilled what he promised Israel, he will fulfil what he promised us the church. Are you seeing the argument that the Prophet is making here?
The Prophet is saying, you once came down, and we saw your power. And we saw how it changed the lives of your people. We saw how Israel was set apart even before the heathen nations of the world, that even in many came in and called upon the God of Israel. And because you once came down, we wait on you in confidence because we know you will come down again, Praise the Lord!
That's one thing that we as God's people have as our privilege and advantage is that we can look back and see who He is and what he has been to the people of all ages in history. That we can see how his power has been at work in biblical figures in the church and in the church or throughout history. And we can say, based on this unshakable evidence, we are convinced beyond any shadow of doubt that Christ Jesus will indeed return. That we have the confidence that scripture has given us the basis to trust God. And so when we wait upon Him, we don't wait upon him with the probability, we don't wait upon him with "maybe, most likely... you know... somehow, you never know." No. We are convinced beyond any shadow of doubt that God will come down, that God will hear our prayer, that God will answer our cry And once again, the world will see the difference between the church and what and what is not. Praise the Lord!
