I. THIS GENEALOGY OF CHRIST IS VERY CAREFULLY SELECTED
We notice that this genealogy that Matthew is giving is very carefully selected.
In fact, if you have an idea about the family tree of Jesus, you may notice that there are quite several names that are missing. Matthew's intention is not to point out each and every ancestor of Jesus, but he has carefully selected certain people that come in the line of Jesus and he has done this with a special reason that he is going to tell you if you are keen to listen.
You will notice that this genealogy also is divided into three periods. You have 14 generations from Abraham to David; 14 generations from David to the exile in Babylon; and 14 generations from the exile unto the time of Jesus.
Now that is not a coincidence that all these periods are exactly 14 generations. Certainly, Matthew is up to something. And we will soon hear about what Matthew is trying to say.
